Legal notice for donations and contributions

Legal ceiling of contributions and donations

Under Law no. 88-227 of 11 March 1988 on the transparency of public life, the annual sum of contributions and donations paid by a natural person to one or more associations approved as a funding association, or one or more financial representatives of one or more political parties, is capped at 7,500 € (15,000 € per taxable household). This means that all donations and contributions that you pay over the year to the different political parties that you want to support cannot exceed 7,500 € (15,000 € per taxable household).

Also, in accordance with article 11-4 of this law, a natural person may give a donation to a party or political group if he is of French nationality or if he resides in France.

Legal entities, with the exception of political parties or groups, cannot contribute to the financing of political parties or groups, neither by making donations nor in any form whatsoever, to their financing associations or their financial representatives, nor by providing them with goods, services or other direct or indirect advantages at prices lower than those usually charged. Legal entities, with the exception of political parties and groups, as well as credit institutions and finance companies having their registered office in a Member State of the European Union or that are a party to the Agreement on the European Economic Area, may neither approve loans to political parties or groups nor guarantee loans granted to political parties or groups.

According to article 11-5 of the aforementioned law, people who have made a donation in violation of the aforementioned rules are punished by three years’ imprisonment and a fine of 45,000 €.

A tax receipt will be sent to you but it should be noted that you do not need the tax receipt to declare your donation to the tax administration; it is only necessary in case of a tax audit.
